For leaders

Thank you for living the Scout Oath and Law, and for being the adult leaders your den looks up to. You are the pillars of our Pack, and the Show happens because of you.

The Family 42 Show gives every Cub Scout in Pack 42 a supportive, low-pressure way to share something they love, and a little of who they are, with the whole pack.

It's Scouting we can see. The uniform shows that a Scout is part of a team. The Family 42 Show lets the team see the person in it, what each Scout loves and does well, and that is how a Pack becomes a family.

How your den takes part

  1. October Kit arrives: fabric squares and markers, delivered to your den before the Pack meeting.
  2. October den meeting Make squares, about 15 minutes, then share and reflect as a den.
  3. October 20 Pack meeting. Families hear about the Show and sign up at family42.com.
  4. Early November Squares back to Vuong. He puts the Family 42 quilt together.
  5. Sunday, November 15 The Family 42 Show, 2:00 to 4:00 PM, First Baptist Church of Wollaston.

The Family 42 square: full instructions

Every Scout decorates one fabric square about themselves, and every square goes into the quilt, performers included. It takes about 15 minutes of a den meeting.

  1. Hand each Scout a square and markers from your kit.
  2. Read the prompts and let each Scout pick one. A drawing, a few words, or a symbol all work. First name at most, nothing else identifying.
  3. Give the den a few minutes to share their squares with each other and say a word about them.
  4. Ask each Scout how they'd like their square shown at the Show, and note it down.
  5. Collect the squares and get them back to Vuong before the Show. A make-up station at the door catches anyone who missed it.

Pick one prompt

  • Something I love
  • Something I'm learning
  • Something my family and I enjoy
  • Something I know a lot about
  • A way I help other people
  • Something I want my Pack to know about me

Your Scout chooses how it's shown

  • I want to say something about it.
  • Please have my adult, den leader, or a Scout buddy read my sentence.
  • Please just display it. Don't ask me to speak.

Three things we'd love from each den

Polite approval isn't the ask. These three are, and they're what makes the mission real instead of something said from the stage.

  1. Make the Family 42 square at an October den meeting, with the kit delivered to your den.
  2. Promote the Show to your families and help interested Scouts put 1 den act together. Nobody has to perform, and a den that only makes squares is fully in the Show.
  3. Share a 2-minute reflection after the Show: what your Scouts said, what worked, and what you'd change.

What to tell families

On Sunday, November 15, Pack 42 puts on The Family 42 Show. Every Scout can do an act, make a square for the quilt, or volunteer for a job. Sign up at family42.com and grab a flyer.

Point them at family42.com. The sign-up asks for a first name and den and nothing more about the child, and it goes to one mailbox rather than to individual leaders.

One reply, please

Reply in the leaders' group with your October square-making date, and say if your den meets before the October 20 Pack meeting. Thank you.
